The purpose of this Notice of Intent is to announce that Health Canada will add a qualifier to the "Omeprazole or its salts" listing on the veterinary use part of the Prescription Drug List on April 30, 2027. The intent is to allow for the non-prescription use of omeprazole when sold to prevent gastric ulcers in horses at a dosage of less than 2 mg/kg/day. Health Canada received a veterinary drug submission for an omeprazole product indicated to prevent gastric ulcers in horses at a dosage below 2 mg/kg/day. After reviewing the safety and efficacy information included in the submission, it was determined that omeprazole, when used for the noted purpose and at this dosage, does not meet the criteria for prescription status outlined in section C.01.040.3 of the Food and Drug Regulations. This amendment will be in effect on 30 April 2027 and will be communicated through the posting of a Notice of Amendment on the Health Canada website.
