The Certain Ruminants and Their Products Importation Prohibition Regulations, No. 2, which cover a range of currently prohibited US commodities, were set to expire on 30 August 2008. The importation prohibition Regulations are a temporary measure that will be repealed or allowed to lapse once the Health of Animals Regulations amendments, currently in progress, are finalized. The Regulations Amending the Certain Ruminants and Their Products Importation Prohibition Regulations, No. 2 extend the operation of the prohibition Regulations to 31 December 2008. Consultation document outlining NZFSA’s proposal to introduce a food standard setting composition and labelling requirements for food-type dietary supplements, the New Zealand (Supplemented Food) Food Standard. The new standard will incorporate most of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The new standard proposes a two year transitional period during which time, products may comply with the existing requirements for food-type dietary supplements or may chose to comply with the requirements of the new food standard.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing an order prohibiting the extralabel use of cephalosporin antimicrobial drugs in food-producing animals. This order is based on evidence that extralabel use of these drugs in food-producing animals will likely cause an adverse event in humans and, as such, presents a risk to the public health.
