Allura Red is manufactured by diazotizing 4-amino-5-methoxy-2-methyl-benzene-sulfonic acid using hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite. The diazo compound is coupled with sodium 6-hydroxy-2-naphtalene sulfonate.

The Food and Drug Administration is amending the color additive regulations to provide for the safe use of spirulina extract as a color additive in coating formulations applied to dietary supplement and drug tablets and capsules.
